latest update for April 29 - NYC

March for Peace, Justice and Democracy
Saturday, April 29 -- New York City
Assembly beginning at 10:30AM -- 22nd Street & Broadway
March steps off at noon
The early weather forecast looks great (low to mid 60s, mostly sunny). Reminder: The NYPD only allows signs and banners to be carried on cardboard poles; wooden, metal, and fiberglas poles are prohibited.

Pre-March Labor Rally: 10:30 am
19th Street between Park Ave. South and Broadway
A very large turn out is expected from the labor movement, and as people gather for this contingent, there will be a rally with representatives of the many unions involved in this effort. As part of the Festival at the end of the march, there will be a Labor tent that will help peoplle get more involved in connecting the labor and antiwar movements.

Pre-March Interfaith Religious Service: 9:40 am
19th Street, between Broadway and Fifth Ave.
People from many faiths and religious traditions will gather for a shabbat service before the march begins. Clergy and Laity Concerned about Iraq is also organizing an afternoon of activities at their tent at the Festival after the march.

Grassroots Action Festival: 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Foley Square

The festival will feature 19 themed tents, providing resources from hundreds of groups and campaigns. You'll find information about a wide variety of ways to take action against the war -- from pressuring legislators to resisting military recruitment efforts to engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience. You'll find displays and materials that will highlight the connections between the war and the struggles for women's rights, for racial justice, for immigrant rights, and for a sustainable environment. There will also be a special tent with peace activities for children, and much more.

Upcoming event and a potential longer project after the school year?

Wednesday May 3 - 7pm
Rev. Lucius Walker talk - Friendshipment project
Downtown United Presbyterian Church
121 N. Fitzhugh (turn north from w. Main, just w. of State St.)
Rochester

Although I’m listing this as a single event for 5/3, there is also the possibility of a longer story in the Friendshipment described below, for anyone who would be able to accompany a group of volunteers to the Mexican Border and/or to Cuba.

Rev. Lucius Walker, Jr, the founder and director of IFCO/Pastors for Peace, and a compelling speaker, will address ROCLA’s 7:00 PM, May 3 meeting at the Downtown United Presbyterian Church (DUPC). Rev. Walker is the director of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), which has the distinction of being the only national ecumenical foundation committed exclusively to the support of community organizing. He also served as Associate General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ from 1973 through 1978. Rev. Walker was wounded by Nicaraguan Contras in 1988, arrested for taking computers to Cuba in 1996, recipient of the Gandhi Peace Award and the Thomas Merton Award and defier of the US Embargo of Cuba.

Pastors for Peace works with the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center in Havana, the Cuban Council of Churches and a distribution committee with representatives from ten different Cuban denominations to deliver US-Cuba Friendshipments. These humanitarian aid shipments mitigate the impact of the embargo and mobilize thousands of US citizens in favor of an alternative. They call for an end to the embargo and normalization of relations between our two countries.

As a matter of principle, the Friendshipment refuses to apply for a license under the terms of the embargo. To do so would be a de facto recognition of an immoral policy. From 1992 to 1995, Pastors for Peace delivered five Friendshipments to Cuba. All encountered resistance from US officials, but arrived safely in Cuba after those officials backed down. These are examples of the impact that people can have when they are organized, motivated and determined. Speaking truth to power and standing firm in the face of injustice are central to the work of Pastors for Peace.

After hearing Lucius Walker if you feel inspiredto help in the 14th Friendshipment we have work for you! Would you like to collect medical equipment, raise funds for medicines, pack and label supplies, load the truck, publicize the event or host the drivers? Would you feel moved to drive a truck and accompany the Caravan to the Mexican border – or all the way to deliver the goods to the Ecumenical Council of Cuba? Please call Vic Vinkey at 271-8723 if you can help in any way.

May 1st “A Day Without An Immigrant: El gran paro americano 2006.”

Rochester's Immigrant Rights group has made plans for its May 1st solidarity action.

It "will consist of a march and demonstration very similar to the one we held on April 10th, starting at the Federal Building and ending at St. Michael’s Church. In addition we will incorporate the following changes:

a. Push back the assembly time to 4:30 pm, with the march to begin at
5:00, to make it easier for workers who have to travel into Rochester fromoutlying towns to participate.
b. Take a shorter, more direct route from downtown to St Michael’s Church.

c. Working with two weeks advance notice, we hope to gain the support of
more organizations and the participation of more immigrants and supporters. We suggested a goal of doubling the turnout we achieved on April 10."

Housing Board for UFPJ April 29 events

United for Peace and Justice has put up a Housing Board on their website for anyone looking for a place to stay while in NYC for the March for Peace, Justice and Democracy on the 29th.

There are places available from NJ to Brooklyn to the Bronx. (And some of the people who are offering housing sound really fun and interesting, too.) Some have beds and some have sleeping bags and some have floor space for the sleeping bag that you bring. The list will be continuously updated, so check it off and on.

There's also a place to post your request for housing.

NYC also has some hostels and other places worth checking out. If anyone is going to photograph in NYC that weekend, I'd be happy to offer help, advice, maps and information. Unfortunately, due to a pre-arranged and previously committed weekend of work on my senior project class' book, I'll be working with students in Rochester.

Wednesday Evening Panel - Grassroots Organizations

Speaking Panel about the Barriers Grassroots Organizations Experience

Wednesday April 12th at 7pm
University of Rochester, Rush Rhees Library – Welles-Brown Room

Friends Helping Friends, a local nonprofit organization, was awarded the federal Compassion Capital Fund Targeted Capacity-Building Minigrant in 2005. Andrew Stankevich, FHF Director, will be hosting a panel of community-based/faith-based and grassroots organizations. This would be a good opportunity to meet activists in Rochester and learn more about the programs and work that each of them is involved with.

The panel will be discussing the difficulties that the organizations have encountered from City, County, State and Federal programs and govt. funded agencies while working for change in the community and delivering services to those in need.

In addition to possibly others, the panel will feature Mr. Andrew Stankevich, Friends Helping Friends, anti-violence advocate, Apostle Joy Powell, God's Holy Outreach Ministries and grassroots emergency housing provider, Activist Charles Kellum, Poor People United.

speaker and rally

DARFUR RALLY: A WITNESS TO GENOCIDE SPEAKS
Thurs, April 27th 7 pm
Temple B'rith Kodesh
2131 Elmwood Ave. Brighton

A host of interfaith organizations are sponsoring a community rally free and open to all to protest the genocide in Darfur. Mohamed Yahya will address the crowd. The massacres continue...

A postcard campaign to the Fed gov't is taking place and postcards will be available at the rally.

The speaker's village was first attacked by the Sudanese Arab militia raiders, the janjaweed,in 1993. His village was destroyed and many of his relatives were killed, raped, or burnt alive in their huts. He was in Cairo at the time. Mohamed Yahya then founded an organization that is now known as Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy.

For information about the rally, contact Isobel Goldman at the Jewish Federation. The Unitarian Church on Winton Road is probably also a sponsor of this event-I'm assuming
that it is.

Hope everyone will come.

FW: [ANNOUNCE] BUS TO NYC FOR APRIL 29 DEMO - FROM BUFFALO; BUY

Subject: [ANNOUNCE] BUS TO NYC FOR APRIL 29 DEMO - FROM BUFFALO; BUY TICKETS NOW!

THERE ARE NO BUSES LEAVING FROM ROCHESTER. THIS IS FROM COLIN EAGER, PEACE CENTER IN BUFFALO:

What: National Peace Demonstration
When: April 29th
Where: New York City
Cost: $50

There will be a massive national peace demonstration in New York City on Saturday, April 29th sponsored by United for Peace and Justice. For more info, see http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3178

The Peace Center will be sending a bus to this important national action -
- to reserve your seat, click here:
https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=3718

The cost of charteringbuses to these events has increased by 75% in the
last 18 months. This means that even with a full bus, we stand to lose approximately $1000. As a result, we have made a few changes to our
system for taking reservations. First, each bus seat now costs $50, a $10 increase. Second, we can no longer reserve bus seats for those who
haven't paid. In order to be sure of a seat on the bus to NYC for this important demonstration, you must pay in advance.

If you'd like to pay by check, you can mail it to us at 2123 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo 14211. If you'd like to pay by credit card, you can click here: https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=3718 or call us at 894 - 2013.

If you can't go to NYC but would like to help cover the cost of sending a strong WNY contingent, your donation would go a long way towards
ensuring that our participation in these national actions is feasible now
and in the future.
